Different Types of Furnaces
- Single Stage Furnace: A single stage furnace is a furnace that only operates on a high stage. For example, if you have a 60,000 BTU furnace and the thermostat calls for heat, the furnace will be producing 60,000 BTU until the thermostat is satisfied.
- 2-Stage Furnace: A 2-stage furnace has 2 BTU settings. When the thermostat calls for heat, the furnace will start on low fire (between 60-70% of high fire) for a period of time before going to the high stage if needed. For example, if you have a 100,000 BTU furnace your furnace will first run at 60,000-70,000 BTU before ramping to 100,000 BTU if needed. 80%-90% of the time your furnace will not ramp to high fire before the thermostat satisfies itself. By doing this provides a more even heat throughout your home and saves you money.
- Modulating or Variable Speed Furnace: This type of furnace is the most efficient furnace there is. This furnace uses the outside temperature and the desired temperature inside to determine how many BTUs are needed and how much airflow is needed to reach the desired temperature inside.
